Cellulite – An Overview
Cellulite is a word that is used to describe fat
deposits under the skin that outwardly give the skin a
dimpled. This dimpling is irregular
and patchy and has been identified with orange peel. In
our never-ending search for the illusive “Fountain of
Youth,” nothing strikes a
chord like the term “cellulite.”
90% of post-adolescent women go on to build up cellulite
at some time during their life even though it is very
scarcely ever seen in
men. The most common areas for a woman to develop
cellulite are the thighs, buttocks and the abdomen.
Although it is often mistaken for obesity, cellulite is
not actually obesity related because it can also take
place in thin lean women.
Interestingly, a fashion magazine first introduced the
term “cellulite” to us. That fact is adequate to
generate speculation among
opposing sides to this controversial subject.
Underneath the dermis and epidermis are three specific
layers of fat. Cellulite tends to develop in the
subcutaneous fat layers. This
layer of fat is unique in its structure compared to the
other layers because its fatty parts are structured into
particular chambers by
strands of linked tissue around it.
Facts About Cellulite
It's summer and you're ready to try out that new swim
suit you bought. It seemed liked ages since you
purchased it and now the long
wait is over. It's the perfect time to show off your
sexy curves at the beach.
As you stand in front of the mirror with your new
outfit, however, reality sets in and bursts your bubble.
You gaze in disbelief and
realize it's all for nothing. In an instant, you know
you can't greet the waves at the beach nor can you
parade in your new swim wear.
The reason: you've got ugly cellulite and it has just
ruined your day!
Cellulite is enough to make any woman cringe. That's
because it looks awful. It appears in the form of bumpy
or dimpled skin. Although
it's not a serious medical condition and is nothing more
than a normal variation of ordinary fat, the presence of
cellulite can lower one's
self-esteem and erode a person's confidence.
“Cellulite ranges in severity. Mild cases can only be
seen when the skin is pinched - the dimpling appears in
the pinched skin. More
severe cases make the skin appear rumpled and bumpy with
areas of peaks and valleys. Cellulite is most common
around the thighs and
buttocks, but it can be found on the breasts, lower
abdomen and upper arms as well,”
At least eight out of 10 women have cellulite and the
risk of getting it increases as you age since this is
the time that the skin loses
some of its elasticity. Stress, an inactive lifestyle,
weight gain, and the use of hormonal contraceptives may
increase your chances of
getting cellulite. The condition also runs in families.
Pros And Cons About Cellulite
We hope to present the pros and cons of the arguments
and allow you to make your own determination and course
of action.
It is interesting to note that, The Journal of the
American Medical Association (JAMA) nearly two decades
ago stated that, "There is no
medical condition known or described as cellulite in
this country.”
It does not mean that there is no cellulite cure as
there is no official medical term for the conditions. It
is evident by the thousands of
products and procedures available to combat the
condition. |
